Before we were memory makers we were just normal parents with a wonderful daughter, expecting our second child. When we found out it was going to be a boy we knew one person who had her wish granted.
We can’t remember the intimate details of telling her, for real, I just asked Tom and he can’t remember either, sorry kids. But we remember that it went something like this. Hey Kendall, you want a baby brother, right? Well, guess what, it’s a boy!!!!
The two of us, Kendall and I, nested the s*&! out of our house. We decorated the nursery together and unpacked all the cute boy clothes handed down from the cousins. Kendall reacquainted herself with her old baby toys. She broke in all the new blankies and lovies for her brother. We picked out cute sheets and some finishing touches for his nursery. Most of the gifts went to Kendall who decided that TJ wouldn’t need them for a while. Then we were ready, we sat back, put our feet up on the glider and relaxed. We waited.
I wish I could have told her to remember the moment, but I didn’t know the stakes. I will write for her what I can recall of the day we brought TJ home. Kendall looked at him with eyes that were taking him in, drinking him up, and falling in love. She smiled with a smile that we had never seen before; her life was complete, she was a sister, he, a brother, we were a family. She touched him gently, with pure love, innocence, and joy. They were chosen for each other, written into the book of life.
Kendall is the perfect sister for TJ. She gives him everything she’s got and expects nothing in return. She treats him like an equal when everyone else treats him like a perfect angel. She jumps on his bed when he’s sleeping, she whispers naughty words in his ear, she steals his toys and cries jealous when Mommy gives him too much attention. How lucky TJ is to have her, the perfect sister for him. He saves his only smiles just for her, he looks only into her eyes, and he gives her everything he’s got to give.
God gave me two beautiful children to love and take care of. They are a perfect match and make our set complete. I love them both with everything I’ve got.
Kendall, TJ is so lucky to have you. I am so proud of you. You are an amazing big sister. I couldn’t have prayed for your relationship with TJ to be any better than it is. Thank you for treating him like an annoying, cute little normal brother. If only we could all see it through your eyes!
I love you little guy! Let your faith be bigger than your fears.
